Additional information

VITAMIN D

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin. It is one of the 24 micronutrients essential for human survival. Sunlight is the main natural source, but vitamin D is also found naturally in fish and eggs, and is added to dairy products. Vitamin D supplementation is associated with a wide range of benefits, including improvements in cognition, immune health, bone health, and overall well-being. Supplementation may also reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and multiple sclerosis. People who are deficient in vitamin D may also experience an increase in testosterone levels after supplementation. Most people are not vitamin D deficient, but they may still not have optimal vitamin D levels. Given vitamin D’s many health benefits, supplementation is encouraged when optimal levels are not present in the body.

MAGNESIUM

Magnesium is an essential mineral and the second most abundant electrolyte in the human body. Magnesium deficiencies are common in developed countries. A deficiency increases blood pressure, reduces glucose tolerance, and causes neural excitation. Magnesium deficiencies are common in Western diets, as grains are poor sources of magnesium. Other important magnesium sources, such as nuts and leafy greens, are not consumed as often. When supplemented to address a deficiency, magnesium can act as a sedative, lowering blood pressure and improving insulin sensitivity. Maintaining healthy magnesium levels is also associated with a protective effect against depression and ADHD. Magnesium supplementation may reduce muscle cramps. More evidence is needed to determine whether magnesium supplementation can improve physical performance, but early results do not appear promising. Intestinal magnesium absorption varies depending on how much the body needs, so there are not many side effects associated with supplementation. If there is too much magnesium, the body will absorb only what it needs. However, excessive doses may cause gastrointestinal upset and diarrhea.
